MAGAZINE : Editing final product

Impressively, the final product looked much like the draft layout which was a positive as we kept to plan as a group.

MAGAZINE : Drafting layout

We came up with a draft of how we would like our magazine to come out as.

Fortunately, it came to plan as the draft and looked as proffessional as possible which was a positive.

MAGAZINE : Choosing most appropriate images from the film

We had to come up with a main picture for our magazine review and hence show what it was representing. Our main picture was a snap shot from the film in the second scene where the two brothers first meet. The picture helped to show that the brothers didn’t look like they were getting on as the younger brother isn’t even looking at his older brother while they are talking.
The picture looked the most interesting and looked like it summed up what the film was about in alot more detail thatn any other image from the film.

MAGAZINE : Analysing design & language conventions of magazine reviews

I researched through the internet before making my film poster and came up with the below which intrested me and my group and helped in the making our film magazine.
Having studied film magazines this year, it is apparent that certain forms and conventions need to be applied.
The film magazine review below that we looked at showed that the main image of the poster was the making of the film rather than an image in the film. We however went with the image within the film as we though it makes more sense showing the reader a little clip about the film and discussing it in little detail to urge the reade to go on and see the film. We however liked the fact that sometimes it is good to challenge other media coventionswhich was done by thr makers of "I AM LEGEND," as shown in the picture below.

MAGAZINE : Researching different film magazine audiences

We researched into similar film magazines inorder to get a rough idea of what was needed for our magazine.
As we were an institution, we had to know our genre which was a drama. That was the first important step in the whole making of the magazine which enabled us to build onto it. We had to think about what a dramatic audience would like and our answer to that was realistic magazine quotes that would give an audience a vision into the film without actually watching the film. It would help to grab the attention of the reader and what them to actually go out and watch the film. For example, quotes such as “This seems like an all nighter,” were a standard everyday phrase that would have spurred the audience to read on in eagerness to find out what the film is about.
We compared a few magazine reviews and came up with a few ideas which helped us to profession our magazine.

FILM POSTER : Drafting / editing

This is a sketch of our film poster.

This was the original layout of our film poster

Then we started taking our pictures

Finally to come up with the final poster

FILM POSTER : Choosing most appropriate images

Below are the images we took that were to be made into our main picture for our poster. We then used fireworks to get our final image.

After using fireworks, our final image came out as seen below;

FILM POSTER : Exploring fonts

We tried out different fonts for our film poster when making the title and the tageline. We used fireworks for the making of the title after various samples and looking at other magazine titles.
Some of the fonts we looked at are below:

We made a few drafts like the one below,

which enabled us to come up with our own title font takeing into consideration the target audience and the genre of our film.

FILM POSTER : Setting mise en scene

We took the picture of our film poster in the bedroom. This was due to the fact that it made more sense as it was contradicting the title of Insomina, whereby the older brother cannot get much sleep. The brother sitting on the bed rather thatn laying i it shows that he can't find sleep. The younger brother looking back at his older suggests he might be the reason to why his older brother cannot sleep. The effects made the younger brother stand out more than the older brother due to the lighting to suggest that the trouble is mailny caused by the younger brother. It shows him as the star character.

FILM POSTER : Sketching images / fonts

Before actually making our film poster, we had a few ideas and made rough sketches that enabled us to start the work on the poster after getting some rough ideas together.

This below, however was how the original poster was meant to look like. This was the sketch we had originally chose and agreed on but however didnt match the title insomnia as much so we decided to change it.

FILM POSTER : Pitching ideas

When analysing a poster, you should consider the following broad questions before you start to focus on the details:

What are the main colours used in the poster?

We had to look at our film and find suitable colours that would match our film and its target audience. As our film was a drama, we thought that red and white would be suitable as red symbolises danger and white symbolises purity and innocence and the two matched together clash which brought a sense of drama.

Are the messages in the poster visual or verbal?

We had both visual and verbal messages in our poster. We had a tagline which was ‘Worse than your nightmares’ which contradicted the picture on the poster of the younger brother looking back at the older brother with a mean face. The messages in a poster are meant to attract the audience and interest them in going to watch the film.

Who is the target audience for the poster?

A poster should be designed for a target audience. The language devices used should be able to suit a certain target audience for example sophisticated words such as ‘I acknowledged my extravagant apartment’ wouldn’t apply to a target audience of age 12. This helped us when designing our film poster as it had a target audience starting at 12 years of age hence the fact of keeping the words simple and understandable.

We done alot of research into other film poster as well as knowing the basic knowledge which helped us come up with a more professional looking film poster.

FILM POSTER : Analysing conventions

I researched through the internet before making my film poster and came up with the above which helped me and my group in making our film poster look more professional.
Having studied film posters this term, it is apparent that certain forms and nventions are applied.
A large title which attracts the eye, bold colours which stand out
from the background, an eye catching picture which would attract viewers to
the film, persuasive language which might encourage viewers to go and see the film are important when making a film poster that is going to attract customers and build a fan base.
An example of how different types of film posters(e.g.horror)use these forms and conventions to attract a certain type of person e.g. horror fans would be a really scary horror film, which will use scary images in order to appeal to horror fans.

A successful film poster will accomplish attracting the target audience and persuade them to come and watch the film.

FILM : Developing a Pitch

Before we even started our film we came up with a sort of plan of what we was going to name it. We came up with a shortlist:

.The Bully
.Territory War Zone
.Bad Night Sleep

We knew that a succesfull short film would have to be conventional yet innovative. A short film would have to meet audience expectations but yet surprise them with something different and new.

We came up with a working title at the time to be Bad night's sleep with a predominante 17 - 20 year old male as a suitable target audience. It was to be broadcasted on the internet via myspace, facebook and youtube.
A brief plan was a man that cannot get to sleep. He was to carry out various activities to pass time.

However, our film changed alot as the title itself changed however as you can see in the film, the concept stayed the same but it was more to do with two brothers.

FILM : Researching into the target audience

Our task was to produce Film approximately five minutes long. And in those 5 minutes using a large variety of camera angles, to make our film interesting and to make sure our shots align with our ideas. The other necessities we had to take in account were the
•Working Title
•Audience
How old they are, whether they are predominately going to be male or female, the lifestyle of the audience, and the social demographic of the audience.
•Broadcast space Where are film is most likely to be distributed e.g youtube, myspace, facebook.
•Genre,is our film going to be a drama, comedy, romantic comedy?
•Plot : This is very important, as it is the storyline of the film.
•Pitch

For our short film, we came up with a pitch that was influenced by other short films we researched. Knowing that our film was going to be dramatic, we knew that are tareget audience were going to be in an age range of 12 - 16. The gender would most likely have been predominantly female due to the fact that our main acters were male and the ladies would have loved to watch them. Target audience was relly important in the making of our film.

FILM : Introduction and Research into other short films

Our task was to produce a film approximately 5 minutes long. We had to use a wide range of camera angles e.g. medium shots, long shots to make the film interesting and certain scenes were best suited with certain shots for example an establishing shot of the house helps to show the audience where the action is taking place.
To help us, our group looked at a few short films to give us an idea of what was to be achieved. A few short films I looked at are listed below

These helped me in knowing what was needed in making a short film and how to go about it especially as 5 minutes seemed to short to be a film itself as I had never actually seen short films before. It not only helped me in the better understanding of what camera shots where best suited in which situations but helped me in knowing what way we could challenge the films through example unconventional editing and camera shots.
